Peakender (at home)Peakender (at home)Yep this coming Friday *should* be the start of Peakender 2020, the three-day beer and music festival at Bakewell Showground organised by Thornbridge Brewery. Of course, it isn't happening, so instead we have our own petit Peakender art home. Indoors of course (it was raining heavily!) We're joined by Alice Batham from the Thornbridge brewing team as we reminisce about previous years and find out how things have been at the brewery over lockdown. Not forgetting sharing a beer each as well, themed around Peakender. You can have your very own Peakender at Home with Thornbridge's rather nifty box here: https://shop.thornbridgebrewery.co.uk/products/peakender-case (https://shop.thornbridgebrewery.co.uk/products/peakender-case) Yep this coming Friday *should* be the start of Peakender 2020, the three-day beer and music festival at Bakewell Showground organised by Thornbridge Brewery.

Hopcast x Gluten Free PintHopcast x Gluten Free PintWe've been talking about it for ages - now we have finally gotten round to a gluten-free episode of the Hopcast. We're joined by Matt, who runs Gluten Free Pint, to talk about the range of choice available nowadays - and of course we all crack open a GF beer. Plus there's plenty to talk about it, with pubs now open again - and one of the Hopcasters actually made their way to one on the day they reopened. We reflect on the sad news that the Devonshire Cat won't be reopening, and we discuss the ill-thought-out Sheffield Council tweet warning people 'Coronavirus will be waiting for them' in pubs. Hopcast Lockdown: Just the four of usHopcast Lockdown: Just the four of usNo guest this week - the four of us take the chance to catch up and share a beer ahead of next weekend's bumper Hopfest. With shops reopening we reflect on our lockdown experiences so far. Our key point of conversation is the Black Lives Matter movement, and particularly the representation of black and ethnic minority people in the beer world. We've looked at a few different ways of tackling this subject during the week before deciding the best thing to do is just to have a real honest and open chat. We welcome your feedback: email beer@sheffieldhopcast.co.uk or drop us DM via Twitter. And this week we all crack open the same beer despite the miles between us - a real classic too: Timothy Taylor's Landlord. Sean possibly enjoyed it in 1952 when it was first brewed while James is drinking it for the first time (which is a bit criminal, really). We're joined by fellow podcaster Nick Law (check out http://hopforward.beer/ (http://hopforward.beer/)) to hear how he's getting on during lockdown. Stay safe, and safe home. Sheffield Hopcast
Hopcast Lockdown Week 3Hopcast Lockdown Week 3We reach the end of the third week of lockdown, and indeed the end of the Easter weekend. So there's only possible theme for this week's beers: Easter, of course! Unless you're Sean, that is... We're also joined by the super lovely James Buxton of Thornbridge Brewery fame to see how he's coping with lockdown (and to sink a cool 12.5% imperial stout too, obvs). We hope you're doing alright in these challenging times and that we're able to provide a little bit of company once a week - please let us have any feedback and if you have any ideas or potential themes we could do let us know. And we're always looking for guests to join us too. We reach the end of the third week of lockdown, and indeed the end of the Easter weekend.

Hopcast LockdownHopcast LockdownWell, what a few weeks it has been! Laura, Sean, Adam and James get together (virtually) to enjoy a beer and reflect on what's going on in the world - and particularly in our local beer scene. It's a hard time for just about everyone in the beer industry, but we try to find a few more positive notes as well. Plus four very good beers (hint: three of us go hard for a Sunday afternoon tipple!) There is also a video version of this podcast coming soon on our Facebook and YouTube channels Well, what a few weeks it has been!

You could use any light/fruity sour, or an IPA also works well, I’ve made it with NM New World IPA before
– Add all the liquids to a glass over ice. Garnish with a wedge of ruby grapefruit.

Stouty Mary
50ml vodka
100ml tomato juice
50ml strong stout – we used Kernel Imperial Brown. A chilli stout would work well too.
Henderson’s Relish
Tabasco
Optional: other chilli! Depending on the stout you could also add a dash of something acid, lemon juice/pickle juice, but we didn’t do this as it could have clashed with the strong stout we selected.
– Stir all ingredients apart from the stout over ice. Carefully float the stout on top using the back of a spoon. Garnish with freshly ground black pepper. Drink with caution!

Tonkoko White Russian – idea and most of the recipe from Brew York (their version is a bit fancier and massively recommended)
25ml vodka
25ml Kahlua/Tia Maria
Dash of cocoa bitters
50ml Brew York Tonkoko (Brew York use the imperial version. Any sweet stout would work!)
100ml milk
– Simply stir all the ingredients over ice and enjoy as an indulgent treat!
Sheffield HopcastnoHalf Pint: March 2019Half Pint: March 2019Adam and James try a cracking line up of beers – from a DDH Pale, to a Strawberry Daiquiri sour, to a New England IPA. Adam, James, Laura and Sean make four stops around Sheffield, with each responsible for picking one round. Whose beer pick will prove the most popular? We start with a quick pre-beer in the Rutland Arms. Then… Stop 1: Sheffield Tap – Hook Island Red, picked by Sean Find out what the team are wearing, our beers of the month, and our challenge for Sean for the evening Stop 2: Pour – Mad Dog Let’s Try Apple Pie sour, picked by Laura We’re joined by Jon, co-owner of this new venue to tell us all about it, and Sean goes shoplifting Stop 3: University Arms – Thornbridge Crackendale, picked by Adam We manage to find a pub with pretty much no beer, and we discuss best and worst Christmas presents we’ve received Stop 4: Gardeners Rest – Dead End Brew Machine Death 3, picked by James It’s snack wars time, we come up with our ideas for a Christmas beer, and have a complete breakdown as Sean tries to be sincere (honestly, listen to the end, it’s worth it) Afterwards we went to Church for a couple. Photos were taken. Much beer was consumed, so it’s a bit sweary at times – if you’re easily ended, be warned.Sheffield Hopcast

For the first time we do the Hopcast in a live pub environment, at the Devonshire Cat for the Beer Week launch event. It is a bit noisy in the background this month which we’re aware of… we wanted to give it a try in the middle of a pub but we’ll make sure we’re in quieter environments for future episodes. Adam, James, Sean, Laura and our new recruit Russ try four Sheffield beers: Kelham’s Pride; Sheffield Brewery’s Don; Lost Industry’s Emmeline sour and Abbeydale’s Salvation Rocky Road stout. Plus we meet Jack from the Dev Cat and have a special report from the first Indie Beer Feast.
